The Top 5 Official Football Themes.

Yes, I am sad enough to really write this article. But football themes are what get you in the mood for a game, be it a Carabao Cup first round fixture or a Champions League final. The question remains, which of these themes is truly the best? Can everyone's favourite, the Champions League anthem, hold up to my intense, day-long scrutiny?

5. Bundesliga 2013-
This is a quintessentially German theme. It has the elegance and grandeur you'd expect from a German competition, it's clinical yet graceful. It just feels like it represents good football, you're not gonna listen to it individually, but it fits its use to the tee. Like the Sebastian Rudy of themes.

4. Premier League 2016-

With a new brand identity for the Premier League came a new theme song, and it's a more than solid showing from the biggest league in the world. A slow building modern orchestral piece that just gets you excited for seeing Jay Rodriguez to score a last-minute winner at the Hawthorns, the multi-million pound refurb may have been worth it just for this theme. Sadly not to be heard in the UK, because our providers get their own fancy themes, but used pretty much everywhere else, this theme could become iconic for international viewers of the league.

3. Europa League 2009-15

Yes, this intro did feature Liverpool players in the graphics. A tough decision between the two Europa League themes, both good anthems for second-tier European football. However, the original gets the edge, simply for the jaunty fun it brings to a competition that otherwise depressed me for the past 7 years, knowing it means it still wasn't our year. While the newer theme has the catchy drum beat, this just summarises how the Europa League is supposed to more fun than its big brother, even if it plays host to Skenderbeu v Partizan instead of Barca v Juve.

2. The Champions League Anthem

I mean, what do I need to really say about this? It's the absolute theme, it makes you 100% sure you are watching the best football in the world. My one complaint is that it may be reaching the end of its lifecycle. Every other competition is getting these fancy new themes, while the Champions League sticks with the old, but admittedly great. I predict a controversial move away from this soon.

Honourable Mention - BT Sport Premier League Theme 2016-

While this couldn't go onto the list because of my own rules, this is a great custom effort by BT. Apparently, the band wrote the song specifically about the football, and it fits well, even if it is slightly pretentious and not anthemic enough for football. Plaudits to BT for thinking a bit more uniquely.

1. Ligue 1 2012-

It took them a few dodgy attempts, and then a take on Pachelbel's Canon which probably could have made it on here too, but Ligue 1 has the best theme in football. I don't what it is about this theme, but I just wanna watch some Frenchmen kick a ball about after hearing it. It may be the little snippets of commentary interspersed, it may be the fact it's just intrinsicly catchy - but it works on every level. Even after remixing it for the new season, they managed to keep the original charm intact, but with a more gritty, competitive vibe.

So, to summarise, I care a entirely disproportionate amount about football themes, and yes, it is slightly sad.
